Like most other investment scams, these callers are usually very high pressure.
Many of the calls made to potential investors are offered by what is known in the business as "boiler room operations." These are operations comprised of nothing but a small office and banks of high pressure telemarketers who follow professionally-developed scripts; and where no oil or gas well exists.
In most of these schemes, the victim is offered a limited partnership in a spurious oil or gas well located out of state or out of the country, minimizing the possibility that a victim may actually visit the fictitious site of the well or the "corporate headquarters."
The USPIS provides the following tip-offs that indicate such a caller may be a swindler:
The oil well investment "can't miss." There is very little risk involved. The promoter has hit oil or gas on every other well previously drilled. A lot of oil or gas has been found in an adjacent field. A large reputable oil company is already operating near the company's leased property, or is planning to do so. A decision must be made immediately to invest in order to assure the purchase of a one of the few interests remaining to be sold. The deal is only available to a few lucky and specially chosen investors. The salesperson has personally invested in the venture himself. A tip from a reputable geologist has given the company a unique opportunity to make its venture a success.
Obviously, any deal that promises a fantastic return at little risk is suspect, to say the least and at Loss Prevention Concepts, Ltd., we simply recommend that you never invest anything with any unsolicited caller offering any type of investment opportunities.
