EXPERT WITNESS: ROGER H. SCHMEDLEN,
CPP, CFE, CII, MIPI:
Mr. Schmedlen has extensive expertise involving all phases of security, security-related premises liability, security & loss control negligence, security guard operations, physical security,
protection during labor dispute violence, and private investigations. Additionally, he has acted as an expert in matters involving alleged security related "racial profiling" in the retail environment and is experienced in analyzing
surveillance videotapes. A security practitioner and prolific author with a career history of real world experience, Mr. Schmedlen has proven to be an effective and
credible expert in security-related litigation.
Security Related Employment Experience:
Mr. Schmedlen has thirty-three years work experience in the investigation and security management field. He has worked in proprietary security management and contract security management as well as acting
as an independent security consultant. He has designed complete corporate security programs for national companies and conducted security surveys of many facilities ranging from small retail stores and apartment complexes to large manufacturing
facilities and one high-rise corporate headquarters housing 6,000 white collar employees. He has conducted security consulting, investigative operations and security surveys abroad, as well as throughout North America. Additionally, he
has managed many unusual crisis situations ranging from a Waco-style takeover of the tribal headquarters of an American Indian community to an anti-terrorist protective operation and a major product adulteration situation.
Professional Associations:
Mr. Schmedlen is a long term member of most major professional security and investigation organizations and is a founding member of two such associations. He has served on various association committees,
and in some cases chaired such committees. Additionally he has served as an officer in some of these associations and was responsible for developing and managing a one-week convention and seminar program for one of these organizations.
Additionally he is active with public sector law enforcement organizations and for many years served on an advisory board of the Private Security and Investigator Unit of the Michigan State Police; as well as serving on the Private Security Committee
of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Additionally, he has been active with security-related legislation and has testified at various state house and senate committees.
Certifications and Licenses:
Although he qualified for his CPP certification "by review" (the grandfather provision available to persons with extensive documented service when the Certified Protection Professional program began),
Mr. Schmedlen chose to obtain his certification "by examination" for improved credibility. He is also certified as a Certified Fraud Examiner, Certified International Investigator and Member--Institute of [British] Professional
Investigators. At this time he holds both a security guard license and private detective license in Michigan. Mr. Schmedlen has been certified as a security expert in Michigan and Illinois courts.

Mr. Schmedlen has addressed many groups on topics such as "Security--An Overview" (Michigan Trucking Association), "Security During Labor Disputes" (American Society for Industrial Security),
