INVOICES: QUESTIONABLE INVOICES--CALL BACK AT A/C 809

This is a low key and very credible variation of other 809 scams.

In these cases, the fraudster simply mass mails spurious invoices or overdue invoice notices to businesses, either showing its business telephone number on the invoice or on an accompanying notice and asking that the recipient call if there are any questions about the bill.  The area code for this response number is 809.

When the business calls the number in an effort to track down what the invoice is for, it will be reassured that there was some type of error and that nothing is owed.

It is the phone call itself here that is the scam.  The 809 area code call is charged to the caller in the same manner as a 900 number--usually $25 - $50.

At
Loss Prevention Concepts, Ltd. we recommend that businesses never return calls when the area code is 809.  (It should be noted that there are legitimate businesses which are covered under this area code--not all calls to this region have premium charges.  Therefore banks, hotels, and similar businesses in that region should not usually pose a problem when the business initiates the call.  It is the responses to unsolicited or questionable communications which result is losses.)
