The internet while a great source for factual information, is also filled with incorrect and misleading information. Because such information is posted, some surfers are naive enough to readily believe such claims, no matter how absurd.
Hoaxes abound and many are simply old urban legends being presented in a new manner. Often such hoaxes come from generally reliable sources who simply pass on unchecked information they receive to their friends as well-intentioned warnings. Recently, for instance there have been many scares concerning E-mail taxes, Internet connect taxes and the spurious Texas Aides Needle warning.
For information on urban legends, our site visitors may wish to go to our Urban Legend Links Section and visit the sites indicated there.
While such hoaxes cause little more than unfounded concern or anxiety, the internet is also a new playing field for wily fraudsters who have found a new and often naïve audience to target in their scams.
Many of the mail and telephone scams shown in our Web site also exist in electronic form on the internet or through E-mail solicitations. The perpetrators of the ancient Nigerian Fraud Letter Scam, for instance, have found a huge new market of potential victims on the internet.
At Loss Prevention Concepts, Ltd. We highly recommend that persons responding to unsolicited E-mail offers be exceptionally cautious, since many, if not most, are out and out frauds or misleading deceptions.
