to refrain from doing something in an emergency you have never done before. In some areas, local fire departments have sites where this training can occur with actual controlled fires. These events are excellent opportunities for the contract service management to take photos for use in the contract service's newsletter, the client's in-house publications and be provided to local newspapers along with a brief press release. Copies of these photos, newsletters or regular print publication stories often find their way to a place of prominence in the homes of security officers and have a significant effect on morale, motivation and pride.
The costs of the officers' training time during these update sessions should be the responsibility of the client company at the regular rate, plus half time for officers incurring overtime. The contract service should be responsible for providing all the training and training aids, as well as scheduling replacements normally assigned to other accounts to cover for officers scheduled at the client account during these training sessions.
This recommended orientation training mentioned erarlier would be applicable with some modifications at the average industrial, commercial, manufacturing or warehousing complex, as well as at a typical large trucking terminal or distribution center. In many cases, where a high level of security is necessary, where unusual duties will be undertaken by security officers, or where an operation is exceptionally complex, this orientation might require more time.
By the same token, regardless of what some legislators and academic theorists may proclaim, there are locations where anything beyond an hour of training and orientation is really unnecessary and excessive. These would typically be smaller facilities which are unoccupied during the periods of security coverage--and where the security officer's sole function is to make periodic clock rounds and act as a fire watch. In other words, performing the services of what was once called a night watchman.
