In this common scam, the intended victim receives a notice that he or she has won a vacation, usually in an exotic location.
However, when the intended victim calls the number given to obtain details, he or she finds that to get this vacation they will have to pay a service charge, buy a membership in a club or otherwise lay out some funds.
Victims who do join such clubs usually find there are additional fees involved, beyond the membership fees and that any vacation packages have so many restrictions they are all but worthless. However, for still additional fees, "upgrades" are available and some of these restrictions may be lifted.
While most victims who join such clubs never receive a vacation, those few who do will often find themselves booked into lodgings such as the "Bates Motel," or worse.
Such scams can originate anywhere, but we at Loss Prevention Concepts, Ltd. suggest that consumers be particularly skeptical of those originating in Orange County, California (Often called the Nigeria of the U.S.) and Florida.
