In these scams, a spurious telephone repair technician calls the home and claims there have been problems on the line and needs assistance in tracking down the source or cause of the problem. He or she then asks that the resident dial 90#--that is nine, zero, pound--and then hang up.
If this is done, the caller is able to utilize the phone line of this person to make long distance calls from a remote location. These calls will be, of course, charged to the victim.
At Loss Prevention Concepts, Ltd. we believe it is a prudent practice to call the servicing telephone company prior to responding to the requests of anyone alleging to be a telephone company representative.
