AUTOMOBILES: ELECTRONIC AUTOMOBILE LOCKING DEVICES

Electronic "keys" which allow drivers to lock and unlock their autos remotely are convenient, but can also provide an unexpected exposure.

When parking away from home, it is a good practice to manually lock the doors, since some professional thieves use scanning devices to clone the electronic signals transmitted by these remote units.  Then, once the driver walks off, the thieves can activate the system and unlock the vehicle.

Like cellular telephone cloning, the greatest exposure exists in areas such as airport parking lots.  Unlocking the vehicle using a remote device, however,  presents little risk except in cases where the vehicle regularly returns to the same area.
