DEADBOLT LOCKS: USE OF DEADBOLT LOCKS

Most everyone is aware that deadbolt locks provide superior protection over most other standard locking devices.  Most people check to insure that deadbolts are secured before retiring for the evening.  Often folks habitually lock them every time they enter the home.

However, it is rare that people take the time to secure the deadbolts behind them when leaving their homes.  Often people may be unaware that the protection offered by deadbolts is eliminated if they fail to take the time to lock them with the key upon exiting.

Making it a habit to always lock deadbolts with the key when leaving a home can minimize exposure to burglary, and to the risk of an intruder or stalker entering the home when the resident is out, to conduct a burglary or wait for the homeowner's return for other purposes--or entering with the intent of creating another way in for subsequent use, such as unlocking an out of the way window.

Dead bolts, unless key-locked inside as well as out, provide little added protection when located nearby a window or other glass which can be broker allowing the intruder to reach the inner portion of the device and unlock it.
