THE
MEDIA, THE PERCEPTION, THE REALITY
Experienced private
investigators regularly amaze clients with the results they achieve
on complex cases, even when working within the constraints of a
tight budget. While security officers function primary
in a control capacity, acting as a psychological deterrent, many
have performed acts which could only be categorized as heroic.
Competent expert witnesses in premises liability litigation often
prove to be the critical element that insures the success of the
case. And recommendations made by security consultants with a
real world attitude often result in increased client profits, as
well as limiting risk to employees.
Private investigators who get media attention are too often the
"cowboys" of the industry, those tough-talking
gunslingers, who learned their trade from outdated escapist
novels. Investigators who have located missing youngsters on a
gratis basis, recovered the life savings of elderly fraud victims,
or simply clarified questions in job applicants' backgrounds,
thereby opening up employment opportunities, seldom make the news.
While many people recall that one serial killer once briefly worked
as a security guard, the public is generally unaware that it was an
off duty security officer who apprehended an armed would-be assassin
in front of the White House a few years ago. When "the
voices" commanded an insane man to go berserk, take his sword
and begin killing passengers on the Staten Island Ferry, it was an
unarmed security officer on the way home from work who risked his
life to apprehend this mass murderer and prevent the deaths of
others.
Many judges hold expert witnesses in low esteem, because of a
proliferation of self-styled specialists and so-called
professionals with questionable credentials. Others
"experts" could be categorized as prostitutes willing to
alter their opinions to suit the wishes of their client--often in
direct contradiction to testimony on previous cases. Competent
expert witnesses in security matters, however, do exist and their
research and testimony has been credited with winning many
lawsuits. Likewise, inept security consultants have been known
to check exterior lighting at plants during daylight hours; and to
provide naive and impractical security system recommendations on
Third World projects, because of their inability to recognize
limitations that may exist outside of North America.
Professionals, however, do their homework and incorporate the
applicable cultural and environmental differences into workable
overall evaluations.
