E-MAIL: RETURN TELEPHONE CALL REQUEST SCAM

Most people are aware of the negative possibilities of the internet and do not respond to Spam or other unsolicited E-mail.  And most users are exceptionally cautious when considering downloads of any type.

Most WWW users have heard of downloaded viewers which, when used, automatically connect the user to a 900 toll service without the user's knowledge.

However, even experienced veteran surfers have become victims of one lesser known internet scam.

Here's how it works.  The surfer receives E-mail asking to call a number prefixed by the area code 809.  Usually this E-mail indicates that the recipient has won a prize of some type and must call to claim it.  In other cases, the E-mail indicates that an unspecified friend or relative of the user needs assistance.

Although the area code appears to be a U.S. code, it is actually a Caribbean prefix, which can be used to sell services by the minute in the same manner as 900 number services--but without the caller being made aware of the charges until the next phone bill is received.
