ASIS CERTIFICATION (CPP)
It is advisable that at least one of the members of the contract service's local management be certified as a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) by the American Society for Industrial Security, International (or, at the least, be able to prove a principal meets the certification qualifications.) Alternately, some services have an association or working relationship with an outside consultant, who holds this certification.
This is the only relevant and credible certification obtainable in the U.S. in the security field. Candidates for certification must have extensive experience in addition to any degrees held and ongoing education is required.
This certification has become a requirement for security management applicants in many large companies, much like a CPA or Chartered Accountant certification might be required for managers with executive financial responsibilities.
Approximately ten years ago, 32% of the individuals in good standing as Certified Protection Professionals had received the designation by review. That is, they were grandfathered into the program on experience alone at the time the program began. . . and never took an examination. Currently, it is believed the number of CPPs in this category has diminished. While some feel that a CPP who obtained certification by review has limited credibility, at the least the certification does provide documentation of extensive experience and or security-related education.
For more information on this certification program, the consumer may want to contact their local A.S.I.S. chapter or A.S.I.S. headquarters at:
American Society for Industrial Security, Int. 1625 Prince Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. __________________________
